PACEFUL

This project explores the conflict between sleep and productivity in university life, where sleep deprivation is normalized at the expense of health and well-being. Grounded in Slow and Reflective Design, ‘Paceful’ is a design intervention designed for sleep and productivity balance through reflection, fostering sustainable behavioral changes toward improved sleep habits, productivity routines, and overall well-being.

RESEARCH & RATIONALE

The publication includes research context, methodologies, summary of key findings, design objectives, and design frameworks in approaching designing for sleep & productivity balance.
Design Objectives:
1) Create opportunities for health and well-being contemplation to influence sleep and productivity choice
2) To design for long-term behavioral changes for university students

Methodologies: Three phases (survey, interviews, and co-design sessions) with university students in Singapore to gain qualitative and quantitative insights from their lived experiences

Design Frameworks: Slow Design (Fuad-Luke & Strauss) & Reflective Design (HCI researchers)

PRODUCT DESIGN

‘Paceful’ is designed to support this balance through targeting time management, behavioral barriers (procrastination, lack of motivation, distractions), and ultimately, to contemplate reflection of personal health and well-being through intentional design choices.

With its tagline ‘Your pace, your peace’, this serves as a reminder to university students to value their own pace within their personalized support system amidst an accelerated pace of life and society.

Main features:  Daily Schedule, Focus Zone, Daily Archive,
Support feature: Community

Designing for Reflection Implementations

DISCOVERY TOUCHPOINT

Adding to the user journey experience, on-campus posters were designed for the discovery touchpoint to ‘Paceful’ using colorful gradients from the app’s color palette alongside the tagline with big bold texts to capture attention. The poster uses relatable and motivating language to nudge a call to action: QR code directed to the app.
